SCP Mourns a Loss

SCP mourns the loss of co-founder and past president (1971) of Division 23, Dr. Joseph M Kamen, Professor Emeritus of Business Administration, Indiana University, where he as an award-winning researcher, teacher, and colleague. He passed away on January 30th, 2014 at the age of 84.

His daughter, Paula, tells us that one of Dr. Kamen’s proudest lifetime achievements was spearheading the formation of Division 23 in the 1960s, and signing up the required number of members to make the new APA division. Many members of Division 23, including Dr. Kamen, came out of the Quartermaster Food & Container Institute, which was located in Chicago and established during WWII, where they worked as psychologists trying to make the K-rations nutritious and palatable for the men in service. After the war, Dr. Kamen worked for many years with Amoco, building the marketing research department there. As a consumer psychologist with a doctorate in industrial and applied experimental psychology from the University of Illinois, he helped transform the field of contemporary marketing.

We are thankful for Dr. Joe Kamen’s efforts to create SCP those many years ago.
